Health Insurance Scenario in India

Despite government initiatives and numerous health insurance awareness campaigns, the scenario in India has changed a little. The survey even presented that 80% of total population of India is not covered by any health insurance policy. The data raises the alarm and brings forth the much-debated topic – the benefits of health insurance plan are ignored largely by people.

National Sample Survey (NSS) comes up with an important analysis that presents the actual condition of the health insurance plan. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) run by Centre only brings in 12% of urban population and 12% of the rural population under its coverage.

As per the information stated in The Hindu – a renowned newspaper publishing company in India, both urban and rural populations ignore the necessity of a health insurance plan at a whopping number as much as 86% and 82% respectively.

The survey clearly represents the fact that ignorance of health insurance policies relies on the living standard of people.

To support the statement, The Hindu showcases the static as at least 90 percent poor residents in urban areas neglect the health plan as compared to the 66 percent richest residents. So, it can be said that poor households remain excluded from the coverage of health insurance policies regardless of rural and urban areas.

The core problem

The government initiative RSBY fails to reach the expected mark because of its organizational lacking. A large amount of tax collection has been given to the health systems, but it comes in no need for poor ones.
Private doctors share a significant proportion of a treatment in both rural and urban areas. The data released by the organization is considerably alarming as a private sector hospital outruns a public sector one in terms of increasing the demand.
Behind this scenario are the reasons that prevail over the society, especially in the rural areas. Financial constraint and no medical facility are the two most common problems rural areas are facing. To eliminate these issues, a right kind attitude towards health insurance awareness is needed.
